The little story

Sector created in 2000 - 1645 partner producers

Nacional cocoa, a traditional variety that only grows in Ecuador, is
recognized worldwide for its typicity and aromatic richness. However, at the beginning
from the 90s a sad observation appears: Cacao Nacional, a true heritage
of the country, is threatened. At the beginning of the 20th century, the massive arrival of diseases
deeply affected Nacional cocoa production. Most of the large
Cocoa farms were then converted into banana plantations. The production of
Nacional cocoa in Ecuador then drops significantly. Furthermore, in order to

meet a need for intensive cultivation, CCN 51 (hybrid variety of lesser
quality) is massively planted. The aromatic quality of Ecuadorian cocoa is
then degrades very quickly.
In partnership with volunteer producers, KAOKA decides to work for the
safeguarding the Nacional variety.
Years of human and financial investment have allowed us to develop
innovative agronomic techniques. The objective? Allow producers to
cultivate Nacional cocoa in an efficient and sustainable way, and thus to
divert from the cultivation of the hybrid variety CCN51. The backup program
is taking place and an overall improvement in quality and productivity is taking place.
continues year after year. He played an essential role in the conservation and
valorization of Nacional cocoa.
